CASSOWARY MOTH

Following up on the expressive ‘Belt Notch!’, Cassowary is back on the virtual pages of TMR with another single from his forthcoming album. ‘Moth’ is a more experimental take on Miles Shannon’s modern jazz style, leaving the impression of a piece of improvisation. It’s cosmic and winding, moving towards some unknowable conclusion, reminiscent of Kamasi Washington’s ‘Fists Of Fury’ or Wilma Archer’s ‘Scarecrow’, with that loose but refined composition. As Shannon reveals, ‘Moth’ is an experimentation with time and groove, and “It was inspired by the sporadic movements of a moth in flight, going towards light. With this in mind, the song is also meant to harmonically represent drastic ascension following a lower point.” With two winners already out from Cassowary, we can’t wait to hear his debut self-titled album out April 24th via Fat Possum. - Hannah Thacker   [Photo credit: Kristy Benjamin]
